One Sided

Where is the Love?

It is a lonely mechanized world out there. Some people are so lonely, so bereft of company, that they have opened their hearts to a tiny machine that seems to make their lives a better place: Roombas.

Some name their little friends and many even dress them in cute little outfits. Because nothing says "love" like a cute little outfit.

Check out the forums if you think I jest!

Some people go so far as to clean their homes before the Roomba goes through so that the little tyke doesn't have to strain itself. Now that's devotion!

Oh, shit!

I just put a crap song into my head!

Excuse me....

"Childrens do learn."

And so do I.

A dream dreamt all of last week took place in Anchorage, Alaska and it was resoundingly beautiful. All around, everywhere I looked, there were mountains, souvenir stores and bars. Magpies flew from branch to branch in the quirky, tree-lined downtown and the air was filled with the scent of reindeer sausage.

In the midst of it all, an eclectic group of lanyard wearing people in various states of reaction to the 50 degree weather. I sported short sleeves and a perma-grin. Others were covered head to toe in puffy jackets and wool. That my feet were kept toasty by flower strewn suede and bunny fur may have played a factor.

A drive down the Seward Hwy to the Alaska Animal Conservatory was almost surreal, it was so beautiful it seemed surreal. The Turnagain Arm, a body of water flowing next to the highway and the Alaska Railway, gave some of the most spectacular vistas.

I was able to see a reindeer, pre-sausage.

Hugo the girl grizzly who, after being rescued from dehydration and starvation by hunters, has made the Conservatory her home. She hangs out in her pond on a regular basis playing with balls, bones and dead smelly fish.
There is irony in Alaska, too!

A dramatic gray swirl of eddy in the Turnagain Arms.

This, my friends, is the luckiest elk in the world. In rut, he has eight females to himself and proudly bugled the point to all lonely males in the area.

The Chugach Mountains

Jen kneels in wonder in front of the Chugach Mountains and worships with her little digital machine.

This man enjoy the afore mentioned reindeer sausage in downtown Anchorage as his dog and girlfriend look hungrily on...

The Worst Mullet Ever to Appear on this Blog

Seriously.
I had other mullets ready to go from the bulging mullet photo file. But I came across this and knew I shouldn't be the only one to suffer sore eyes.

You're welcome.

The Power of Pee

Urine Battery Turns Pee Into Power

Really.

See?

Justice, American Style

The Senator Larry Craig debacle has been interesting to watch from a distance. The usual backtracking, flip-flopping and denial one gets used to with politicians. But another element has upped the amusement factor for this HUC narrator, and she can't help but share it with you as she types of herself in the third person.

Craig's loyal daughter, Shea Suzanne Howell appeared on ABC in order to tell the world that her Dad is not gay and that he is a wonderful man. Two GUARDIAN readers watched her outpouring of love. And recognized her.

The sent information late Wednesday to the local sheriff (“You would think the Boise police would go ahead and arrest the “stand up” character witness’s Larry had with him Saturday!”) who verified that Howell has an open warrant.

What will happen next in this ongoing idiocy trifecta, no one knows. Not even the players themselves.

UPDATE: He's resigning. Again.

"I guess I'm a fan. Can you imagine wanting to see William Shatner in person?"

Hello

The Wombat welcomes you to the end of the week.

Jen has a fever and will is not responsible for the oddness of any of the content to be found here until her fever breaks. She has odd cravings for orange soda and potatoes. She's been playing Neopets when she can stand straight enough to walk.

She's a mess.

And she thinks you're swell.

Hubble Telescope vs. The Lucky Camera

"The object is distorted by the haze most of the time," the inventor of the system, Dr Craig Mackay of the Institute of Astronomy in Cambridge explained,"but every now and again there are moments when the haze drops and you can see it very clearly."

The Lucky system gathers together all the clear pictures and throws out the distortions to produce images that Dr Mackay believes are the clearest ever images from the ground.

"The images space telescopes produce are of extremely high quality but they are limited to the size of the telescope," Dr Mackay added. "Our techniques can do very well when the telescope is bigger than Hubble and has intrinsically better resolution."

Two images have been published to date. One is of the globular star cluster M13 which is at a distance of 25,000 light-years. (the mostly orange image on the top right)

Stars that are as little as one light-day apart can be differentiated in the picture.

The other shows very fine detail in the Cat's Eye Nebula (NGC6543). (the image to the left)

I can't begin to tell you how happy I am to post something with the word "globular" so prevalent in the text.
