Out of the Ruins

One of Egypt's most famous pharaohs and grandfather of King Tutankhamun, Amenhotep III has had his massive red granite head unearthed from the ruins of the mortuary temple in the southern city of Luxor.

"Other statues have always had something broken: the tip of the nose, the face is eroded. But here, from the tip of the crown to the chin, it is so beautifully carved and polished, nothing is broken."

She added,"But he may have looked exactly as this statue and he may have been a very beautiful, very handsome man"

Taking Shelter

The Jesusita Fire in Santa Barbara, CA caused these two to take shelter together.

The fawn is 3 days old and the bobcat about 3 weeks. The fawn came from somewhere in the fire and the bobcat from Carpentaria. They immediately bonded and snuggled together under a desk in the Santa Barbara County Dispatch Office for several hours.

Turritopsis nutricula: the world’s only ‘immortal’ creature

Jellyfish usually die after propagating but the hydrozoan medusa Turritopsis reverts to a sexually immature stage after reaching adulthood and is capable of rejuvenating itself. It does this through the cell development process of transdifferentiation.

The 4-5mm diameter creature is the only known animal that is capable of reverting to its juvenile polyp state.

Theoretically, this cycle can repeat indefinitely, rendering it potentially immortal.

Watch out, kids.

I Made This

Lentil Artichoke Stew

Makes 6 servings

1/4 cup vegetable broth
1 onion, chopped

2 large garlic cloves, pressed or minced

2 teaspoons ground cumin

1 teaspoon ground coriander

1 cup dry (uncooked) red lentils (3 cups cooked)

1 bay leaf

2 cups water
juice of 1 lemon

2 24-ounce cans chopped tomatoes (preferably fire-roasted), un-drained, or 6 cups freshly chopped tomatoes plus 1 cup tomato juice

1 1/2 cups quartered artichoke hearts (1 9-ounce frozen package or 1 15-ounce can)

1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper (optional)

1/4 teaspoon salt, or to taste
1/4 teaspoon black pepper, or to taste

Heat broth in a large saucepan. Add onion and sauté on medium heat for about 5 minutes, until golden. Add garlic, cumin, and coriander and cook for 2 minutes, stirring frequently. Add dried lentils, bay leaf, and water to pan and bring to a boil. Lower heat and add lemon juice, tomatoes and their liquid, artichokes, and crushed red pepper (if using). Simmer for about 20 minutes, until the lentils are tender. Remove and discard the bay leaf. Add salt and black pepper, or to taste.

I had to substitute yellow for red lentils but was not disconcerted. So not disconcerted that I took a bowl to "taste" it ended up almost finishing it before I called Dianne to dinner.

In a Fix

Note the foot pressed up anxiously against the plastic as the little squirrel teeth
try to eat through the bottom of the plexiglass prison.

A blur but the frantic creature was in full freak mode at this point.

After the Great Escape, he returns to conquer his fear of small, confined seedy places.
Brave soldier.

Up and clinging to the edge, a squirrels life consists of constant risk, much like the life an international spy.

The Ice-Axe vs. Frozen Soul

Kafka in comics.

Kafka journeys.

It is not necessary that you leave the house. Remain at your table and listen. Do not even listen, only wait. Do not even wait, be wholly still and alone. The world will present itself to you for its unmasking, it can do no other, in ecstasy it will writhe at your feet.

Where I Could Be, One

Externsteine, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany

Externsteine consists of five enormous rock pillars in northern Germany and has been regarded as sacred since prehistoric times.

It is thought to have been a pagan cultic center until Charlemagne abolished Saxon paganism in 782 AD. Christian hermits made it their own in the Middle Ages.

Externsteine contains a number of astronomical alignments and attracts Neopaganism and New Agers and me.
