New Sports Fans Low

In Milan, Italy, the Champions League quarterfinal between Inter Milan and city rivals AC Milan was abandoned after 73 minutes on Tuesday when Milan keeper Dida was struck by one of dozens of flares thrown down from the stands.

German referee Markus Merk took the players off the pitch at the San Siro stadium after Inter fans began hurling plastic bottles and then over 30 flares on to the penalty area below them after a header by Esteban Cambiasso was disallowed.

This kind of thing is just lunacy, it really is.

And this the day before Liverpool return to the Heisel Stadium to play Juventus for the first time since the disaster that cost nearly forty lives and got English clubs banned from playing in Europe for ten years...

Return to Heysel? Uhm... they were playing in Turin at the Delle Alpi (and being super-pedantic, the first time Liverpool and Juve had played each other since the disaster was a couple of weeks ago in the first leg of the tie, but that really is being super-pedantic).

Heysel itself was more or less torn down, if memory serves, after the disaster and was rebuilt as the King Somethingorother Stadium.
