Reading Gunnar Staalesen's THE WRITING ON THE WALL and was entranced and delighted with the first line:
"When one Friday afternoon in February Judge HC BRandt, age seventy, was found dead in one of the better hotels in town, wearing nothing but flimsy women's underwear, rumours soon began to spread."

I started reading that last week, but it didn't really grab me. Something about the style - not sure if it's the original or the translation - was rather jarring, I thought. It's since fallen by the wayside a little as I pick up with the other books I'm on at present.
I'm half way in and still enjoying it though it's a 'pick up put down' and not a 'hell hath no fury like a reader torn from this book' kind of book.
