Labor Day

Starting at 5 yesterday, a young female charge of this household began giving birth.

It wasn't me.

Young Sookie, a beautiful tabby taken off the streets a week ago, gave birth to five black, white and tan yappers who have kept up a stream of complaining "wwweeeeeeeee" sounds when ever they're seperated from mommy's nipple. After the fourth rapid birth, poor Sookie had a breech baby she was unable to pass and went in to the emergency vet for a c-section that cost about $1400. The baby in the canal was malformed and died. The baby stuck right after it lived after a night of suckling.

Mommy is tired. So tired I've had to force feed her. She's dragged herself away from the squalling, writhing mass of kittens a few times with one invariably still holding onto her.

At times, everyone is on a nipple suckling away. Mommy purrs then heads off to sleep. The quiet can last a whole twenty minutes sometimes. Then the "wwweeeeeee" begins again. They're tiny, smaller than a palmful, and they're already growling and fighting fiercely over feeding stations.

how darn cute! - I wish you were in Massachusetts, I'd gladly have taken a kitten (providing they were up for grabs)

Awwwww!

They're adorable. And you're one of the Good Guys, Jen (but we already knew that).

That is way too cute, so much so I'm crying vanilla Coke. Congratulations to the mother!

I second Chris, but with more fear. If you'd been anywhere near us, no doubt Mrs Banks would've snatched a couple of kittens. But I wouldn't let this kitten thing get out of hand. Let them know, no automatic weapons in the house, claws are for gripping toys and closed bathroom doors are closed for a reason.

Jen, I'm so glad things went a bit better for Sookie than they did for Buttons.

Some people in this world are so wonderful they should be cloned, and you're one of them.

I'd forgotten what baby's look like. always exciting and remarkable. you and your buddy did a good job, being there for the mom. where would she be if someone hadn't found her.???? now, she'll be taken care of and find a good home for her and each baby. thanks, for being there and caring. I can we're them all yelling at Sookie from the other room. Any time the furry food mobile attends to her own needs, the kids complain loudly.

It's difficult to give them up after eight weeks but that's just about the time they turn into indoor tornadoes. knocking everything down just for the sake of watching things fall and running over and under everything.

What awesome photos, what cute kittens, and I'm so glad that you gave the mom a safe haven.....

Indoor tornadoes, lol. Almost as bad as plotbunnies.

Thanks for taking the mommy in and make sure the wee cuties got a safe place.
