My Literary Top 10
- The best short story I've ever read: This first directive made me stop short, wince, then shake my head like a cartoon character that had just hit a wall. When thoughts flooded in, they were all of Neil Gaiman. This did not make the choice easier. Settle, settle, settle... OK. "Chivalry" from the Smoke and Mirrors collection. That story gave me pleasure heretofore unknown to my mind.
- Book I finished reading but wanted my time back afterwards: Huge list. Immense. I'll go with the latest. The Nature of Rare Things by Derek Wilson - i.e. McMillan and Wife have a seance and Wife is put in terrible danger and McMillan must daringly rescue here, but not really! Gah!
- Book I would blush to be seen reading in public: Book and Blush do not go together. Blush and Public suggests wine and snark, Book and Public suggests work. But I, too, suffer from a recurring dream in which Jonathan Lethem speaks to me theoretically of poppy as Thomas Disch tries to Baptize me into the Church of Literary Chaos.
- Best film of the book: Mommy Dearest
- Books that should be on the national curriculum: Michael Parenti's To Kill a Nation and Karen Elizabeth Gordon's The Transitive Vampire.
- Most out of date, misleading and just plain wrong author photo: Holy Hell! Well, first thought was Jan Burke but many, many follow.
- A writer Ive met who name-dropped like an idiot: Ha! Can't do it. I'll see this person again and they'll be drunk and feisty.
- My favourite book shop: The People's Books in Milwaukee although a universal love for anyplace I can get a decent (i.e. not top 10) book has me dancing the happy Snoopy Dance of Joy.
- Authors Id like to see get the recognition they deserve: Long list. Michael Collins, David Bowker, Steven Torres, Manuel Ramos, Keith Synder off the top of my head.
- Authors Id most like to share a flat with in an interesting ménage-a-trois arrangement: Hee hee hee! Alan Cummings and the afore mentioned David Bowker. I'll keep the whys to myself.

And Steven T. will be writing about Manuel R. in an upcoming Crimespree. Thank you (and Jon of course) for doing what you can to spread the recognition.
